Lesson 2: Sarasvatī Gāyatrī Mantra

The following mantra is a short but potent way to invoke the blessing and power of Sarasvatī. Please take a comfortable but upright posture and settle into your seat before you start chanting. Let your energy and attention settle. You can also choose to simply listen.

Oṁ sarasvatyai vidmahe
brahmaputryai dhimahī
tanno devī pracodayāt

Translation
Oṁ, may we know Sarasvatī, who flows with inspiration! May we meditate on the daughter of Lord Brahmā! May the Goddess inspire us!

Word-by-Word Translation:

Oṁ sarasvatyai vidmahe
brahmaputryai dhimahī
tanno devī pracodayāt

oṁ = Oṁ

sarasvatyai = (dat-sng-f) to Sarasvatī

vidmahe: (3rd-sng-opt ātmanepada of √vid) May we know 

brahmāputryai= (dat-sng-f) to daughter of Lord Brahmā

dhīmahi: (3rd-sng-opt of √dhī) We meditate

tan: (nom-sng tat) this

naś: (acc-pl naḥ enclitic form) us

devī= : (nom-sng-f) Devī, Goddess 

pracodayāt: (3rd-sng-opt of pra + √cud) May he inspire (pra + cud) to impel, incite, animate, inspire.
