Stories and songs of praise of Śrī Kṛṣṇa are a common feature in all the traditional sacred arts. In this particular piece, Kathak Guru Pta. Shambhavi Dandekar performs a beautiful dance honoring Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Each line describes one of his features or attributes (for example, that he wears a garland around his neck, or that he is beloved to the gopīs), and she conveys the meaning of the words through her dance. In this way, teachings – and more importantly, their underlying energy – are shared nonverbally in the culture, through the language and beauty of dance.

As you watch this piece, try and connect not just with what the dancer is conveying about the divine through her movements and expressions, but also the devotion, tenderness, and serenity that is the blessing of Kṛṣṇa sādhana.
